Chronometer

2015

Sound Performance

The chronometer is an object for measuring time. I enter the space, which is lit by a single light source. I wind a small device—a dancing cat musical toy carried over from childhood. I let the device play its song cycle. Through the unwinding of the spring, energy is released and the song slows down. After this is completed, I begin to play a recording of the device. The recording has been manipulated—time is now dilated. I lie down on the ground and lift my head. I am mimicking the actions of my infant daughter when she trains her new muscles to perform tasks I take for granted. Over the course of ten minutes, I let my head descend to the ground. I inscribe my daughter’s actions with my body, stretching these moments to increase strain and tension. The performance ends when the recording stops. Performance was presented at Livestock: Bundles of Mysteries, curated by 4D Space (Aine O'Hare and Tara documentation by David Stalling and Leah Smith.
