As I work through these images, creating collages and their subsequent animations, memories come to me. One thing I had forgotten about visiting Havana were the strict boundaries between tourists and locals at that time. Locals were not allowed in tourist spaces unless they were working there, while we as tourists could move with greater freedom, though we needed to be cautious if we wandered too far from our demarcated paths. There were also parallel economies. In 2004, we used US dollars, and then in 2007, we used a Cuban peso specific for tourist use, while there was an alternate currency for locals. I tried to visually play with these boundaries in this work and the degree of fluidity that existed between spheres as people found ways to transgress.
